I had several placement supervisors of the course of College and University and the opportunities they created for me has shaped my practice as a worker.

I am a social worker as well l as part time youth worker. As a qualified Practice Educator which enabled me to support placements from a range of disciplines, was unable to in CLD as I did not have a CLD degree, . I welcome a course for placement supervisors , similar to the link worker courses in social work.

At this particularly difficult time for all professions I think CLD have the opportunity to raise their profile and enhance the life experiences of individuals and groups struggling to come to terms with the new ever changing norm. Becoming a good effective CLD practitioner is key to the success of this profession

The placement should be a place where learners can merge their academic learning with practical situations.

Historically my employer only takes on a small number of student placements due to the time commitment of our ever shrinking CLD staff. Usually this is a senior manager that takes this role on and not CLD Worker.

I have had a student on placement and had NO input from the university at the beginning and yet was expected to complete paperwork to meet their needs. If employers are offering this opportunity they should be supported by the learning establishment so their student gets the most out of the experience.

This should be like going for an interview, learners should treat it as such and make sure they do some research before making enquiries for a placement.

Not all placement providers will be familiar enough with the CLD ethics, values, principles, competences or theories to do this well - I think this is primarily for the student and the education provider to do, but the placement provider can support if suitable skilled, trained and experienced in CLD.

Reflective practice can be quite difficult to start, so supervisors should be given help to assist students develop this as supervisors may be ""rusty"" in this area.

Whilst as a practitioner we all strive to continually reflect in practice, it can be very difficult in reality. However I feel it should be included to help not only the student but the placement supervisor, I also feel it should be aligned more with recording for inspection.

I have heard so many negative stories about placement supervisors failing a placement and the university or college ignoring this. How can they do this?

2

02/10/2020 08:13 AM

As a placement supervisor I would regularly meet with the student in a 1-1 to discuss how the student is doing again this should be more in line with the placements procedures for support and supervision and CPD with a final report outlining the students competencies and development areas if any are found.

Many placement providers are not necessarily traditional providers of CLD, many are what you might call an allied profession - which many graduating students may go on to join the workforce of. I think it would be useful for the placement training programme to include space for placement supervisors to discuss how their own setting or practice relates to CLD - help the student to consider cross-pedagogical theory in a practice environment.

Communication and supporting students who are struggling?

I had a student where I eventually and reluctantly had to cancel the placement - communication with the student and the uni was extremely poor. I am passionate about being able to offer these opportunities but didn't feel the student or the uni respected this was a a real work environment with real consequences to poor performance. This also makes it difficult for me to justify taking on further students.

As said in the previous comments box. Educational institutions must take on board the professional opinion of placement supervisors, otherwise there is no point in the placement. I have witnessed too many poor practitioners being passed, who are not up to scratch.
